Why Do Kids Need Braces?
Kids and teenagers may need braces for any number of reasons, including overly crowded and crooked teeth, or an “inappropriate bite,” which is called malocclusion. Malocclusion happens when there’s a difference in the sizes of the top and bottom jaws. When the upper teeth bite over the lower teeth, it’s called an overbite. When the lower teeth stick out ahead of the upper teeth, it’s called an underbite.
Fixing these issues has many benefits. For starters, it improves the way your kid’s smile looks. This can have a tremendously positive impact on their self-esteem and confidence. But it’s not just about looks. A straight smile also has many health benefits, like:
Improving your kid’s ability to chew few
Avoiding tooth decay and [gum disease]
Preventing bone erosion
Reducing the risk of chipped teeth

When Will My Child Begin To Wear Braces?
There is no exact age when a child should get braces. The Academy of Orthodontics recommends children visit an orthodontist for the first time no later than age 7. The sooner your child begins treatment, the better the chances of correcting future orthodontic issues.
We often recommend braces during childhood or early adolescence because it’s a period of change. Treating young jaws and bones while they are still malleable allows for faster treatment. Besides, kids and teens are surrounded by other kids who have braces, so they won’t experience the emotional anxiety they may face as adults if they need to wear braces.
But while 7 years old is a good time for a first orthodontic consultation, it may not be the most appropriate time for every child. The best way to determine when and which braces are right for your child is to contact us to schedule a consultation at our dental boutique. During this initial consultation, a pediatric orthodontist can get to know you and your child better and create a personalized treatment plan that is perfect for his or her smile.
Kid And Teen Braces Options At Dr. Patty Miami
Ceramic Braces
Ceramic braces are very similar to traditional metal braces. They mimic them in shape and size and employ the same mechanism to move teeth. The only difference is that ceramic braces are clear or tooth-colored, so they are almost unnoticeable. This is a great option for teens that want a less noticeable option than metal braces.
Traditional Braces
Metal braces are the OG orthodontic tool for straightening crooked teeth and correcting facial asymmetries. If you had braces as a teen, you probably had traditional metal braces.
These braces consist of stainless steel brackets that are attached to each tooth and connected by a thin wire. The wire is attached to the brackets using tiny rubber bands or elastics that come in lots of different colors. Many kids and teens love personalizing their braces with their favorite sports team colors or seasonal combinations.
The purpose of these braces is to create gentle yet continuous tension that gradually moves the teeth into their correct position.
Invisalign Teen
Invisalign clear aligners have become the most popular option for straightening teeth without braces. With Invisalign Teen, your child will get a series of tailor-made aligners that they wear for one or two weeks at a time. A huge benefit of Invisalign is that the aligners are removable, so they pop them out to eat, drink, and brush their teeth. However, it is important to note that for the Invisalign treatment to be effective, aligners must be worn for around 22 hours a day every day.
